Protein Production Technology

The TimberFish system was developed to produce clean safe seafood in an environmentally compatible and sustainable manner.  It also was to solve the major problems of the recirculating aquaculture industry while remaining economically profitable. Producing fish for human consumption is an obvious business application and one that would not need excessive consumer education and market development.  However, the long term future for feeding the world’s growing population will probably depend, not only on the use of existing animals for food, but also on the development of high protein substrates for the manufacture of processed foods and feeds.  In this area the TimberFish technology offers substantial growth potential.

For decades research on the development of Single Cell Protein has offered the promise of extensive new food substrate sources for the generation of human food.  Unfortunately, the costs associated with production, harvesting and processing of such microbial based substrates have always been too high for practical and economic application.

The TimberFish system provides an economic solution to these problems.  This technology uses plant material from forests to generate a microbial biomass. Larger organisms consume the microbes and then, in the TimberFish Aquaculture System, become live natural food for carnivorous fish. However, the system’s unique invertebrate harvesting techniques can be used directly to provide a microbial-invertebrate substrate for processed feed and food production.  This then becomes a much more efficient method of producing food than the growing of vertebrate animals.  In addition, the system is its own waste and wastewater treatment system and production residues from the process constitute a high-energy substrate that can be used to provide renewable energy for all of the production needs.  Thus the TimberFish technology opens new possibilities for the future economic production of proteins for foods and feeds.
